Board game harmonized system code
Product Overview Board games classified under HS Code 950490 encompass a diverse range of tabletop games designed primarily for recreational and educational use. These products are typically composed of durable materials such as high-grade cardboard, plastic, wood, or composite substances, with dimensions varying according to specific game formats but generally ranging from compact travel-sized versions to larger, standard sets with multi-component assemblies. This classification includes processing levels from fully assembled boxed sets to modular kits requiring user assembly. Key quality attributes include precise manufacturing tolerances, robust component durability to withstand repeated handling, and compliance with safety standards relevant to materials and finishes. The HS Code 950490 covers subcategories such as traditional board games (e.g., chess, checkers), strategy games, and puzzle-based games, facilitating detailed categorization within customs and trade frameworks. Commercially, these products serve retail distribution channels, specialty toy and game stores, educational institutions, and leisure service providers. Their positioning in the market is underscored by their compliance with international safety and quality norms, making them suitable for global distribution and competitive in terms of product reliability and user engagement. HS Code Classification & Trade Specifications The HS Code 950490 is situated within Chapter 95 – “Toys, games and sports requisites; parts and accessories thereof,” with Heading 9504 specifically designated for “Articles for funfair, table or parlor games, including pintables, billiards, special tables for casino games and automatic bowling alley equipment,” and Subheading 950490 covering “Other games, including board games.” This classification is justified by the product’s nature as a tabletop game intended for entertainment and social interaction, excluding electronic or mechanical components which fall under other codes. Standard trade considerations for board games under 950490 include packaging in sturdy corrugated cartons with internal protective inserts to prevent damage during transit, typically accompanied by shrink wrapping to maintain integrity. Preservation methods focus on moisture resistance and protection from environmental factors such as UV exposure and temperature fluctuations to preserve material quality. Shipping requirements emphasize compliance with international transport regulations, including ISPM 15 for wooden packaging components when applicable. Quality standards referenced include ISO 8124 for toy safety and ASTM F963 where relevant. Adherence to WTO trade facilitation guidelines and harmonized tariff schedules ensures seamless customs clearance and accurate tariff application in cross-border transactions.
