Caravan HS Code description
Caravan harmonized system code
Product Overview The caravan classified under HS Code 871610 refers to a trailer or semi-trailer designed primarily for recreational or accommodation purposes, towed by motor vehicles. This product category encompasses self-contained mobile living units constructed with durable materials such as galvanized steel or aluminum frames, insulated composite panels, and fitted with essential amenities including sleeping quarters, kitchenettes, and sanitation facilities. Physical specifications typically range from 4 to 10 meters in length, with gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR) varying between 750 kg to 3,500 kg depending on design and configuration. The processing level involves advanced manufacturing techniques such as welded chassis assembly, integrated electrical and plumbing systems, and quality assurance testing to meet safety and durability standards. Subcategories within HS Code 871610 include caravans with or without motor propulsion, differentiated by their structural design and functional features. Commercially, these caravans serve key roles in tourism, mobile accommodation, and temporary onsite lodging for industries such as construction, mining, and event management. The product offers competitive advantages through modular design flexibility, compliance with road transport regulations, and adaptability to diverse climatic conditions, positioning it as an essential asset in both domestic and international markets. HS Code Classification & Trade Specifications The HS Code 871610 is situated within Chapter 87 (Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock), Heading 8716 (Trailers and semi-trailers; other vehicles, not mechanically propelled), and specifically identifies caravans and camping trailers. The classification rationale is based on the caravan’s function as a non-motorized living accommodation vehicle intended for transport by a motorized towing vehicle. This classification excludes motorhomes (HS 8703) and focuses on trailers designed for habitation. Trade considerations include standardized packaging methods such as shrink-wrapping and protective framing to prevent damage during multimodal transport, with preservation techniques addressing moisture control and corrosion resistance. Shipping requirements mandate compliance with international road transport safety standards (e.g., ADR for Europe) and adherence to customs documentation protocols including detailed commercial invoices, certificates of origin, and conformity declarations. Quality standards referenced include ISO 10012 for measurement management and ISO 9001 for manufacturing quality assurance, ensuring consistency and reliability in product performance. Compliance with WTO’s Harmonized System and importing country-specific regulations facilitates smooth customs clearance and reduces trade disputes.
Caravan Chapter Note
1.- This Chapter does not cover railway or tramway rolling-stock designed solely for running on rails. 2.- For the purposes of this Chapter, “tractors” means vehicles constructed essentially for hauling or pushing another vehicle, appliance or load, whether or not they contain subsidiary provision for the transport, in connection with the main use of the tractor, of tools, seeds, fertilisers or other goods. Machines and working tools designed for fitting to tractors of heading 87.01 as interchangeable equipment remain classified in their respective headings even if presented with the tractor, and whether or not mounted on it. 3.- Motor chassis fitted with cabs fall in headings 87.02 to 87.04, and not in heading 87.06. 4.- Heading 87.12 includes all children's bicycles. Other children's cycles fall in heading 95.03.
