Coconut shell charcoal HS Code description

Coconut shell charcoal harmonized system code

Product Overview Coconut shell charcoal classified under HS Code 440220 refers to a carbonized fuel product derived from the controlled pyrolysis of coconut shells. This charcoal variant is characterized by a high fixed carbon content typically ranging between 70-85%, low volatile matter, and minimal ash content (usually below 5%), ensuring superior combustion efficiency and reduced smoke emission. The product is processed through standardized carbonization methods, including kiln-based or retort systems, to achieve consistent particle size and moisture content under 10%, meeting industrial-grade quality parameters. HS Code 440220 encompasses subcategories such as lump charcoal, charcoal briquettes, and activated charcoal derived specifically from coconut shells, each distinguished by form and intended use. Commercially, coconut shell charcoal is predominantly utilized in food service sectors for grilling and barbecuing due to its long burn time and odorless combustion, as well as in retail markets for consumer use. Additionally, it serves as a raw material in charcoal-based processing industries, including activated carbon production and metallurgical applications. Its competitive advantage lies in its renewable origin, high calorific value, and environmentally sustainable profile, making it a preferred choice in global markets focused on clean energy solutions. HS Code Classification & Trade Specifications The complete HS Code 440220 is structured hierarchically: Chapter 44 (Wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal), Heading 4402 (Wood charcoal, including shell or nut charcoal), and Subheading 440220 (Coconut shell charcoal). This classification is based on the product’s botanical origin and the physical form of charcoal derived specifically from coconut shells, distinguishing it from other wood-based charcoals. The classification rationale aligns with the Harmonized System’s criteria emphasizing raw material source and carbonization process. In international trade, coconut shell charcoal is commonly packaged in woven polypropylene bags or multi-ply paper sacks with net weights ranging from 10 kg to 25 kg to ensure ease of handling and prevent moisture ingress. Preservation involves maintaining moisture content below 10% to prevent microbial growth and combustion hazards during transit. Shipping is typically conducted under standard dry cargo conditions, with adherence to International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code provisions when applicable. Quality standards comply with ISO 17225-1 for solid biofuels and relevant national standards, ensuring consistency in calorific value, ash content, and particle size distribution. Documentation and classification practices conform strictly to WTO guidelines and international customs requirements to facilitate smooth clearance and regulatory compliance.
