Copper cathode HS Code description
Copper cathode harmonized system code
Product Overview Copper cathode classified under HS Code 740311 refers to refined copper in flat, rectangular shapes that serve as primary raw material for various metallurgical and industrial applications. These cathodes are produced through electrolytic refining processes, resulting in a minimum copper purity of 99.99%, with standard thicknesses typically ranging from 0.2 to 0.5 millimeters and weights standardized per international trade norms. The product classification under 740311 encompasses unwrought refined copper cathodes, which may be further differentiated by surface finish and impurity levels. Copper cathodes are essential in manufacturing electrical wiring, electronics, plumbing, and roofing materials, as well as in alloy production within the processing and fabrication industries. Their high electrical and thermal conductivity, combined with corrosion resistance, positions them as a strategic commodity in global metal markets. The product’s compliance with international metallurgical standards and consistent quality ensures its competitive advantage in import/export transactions involving bulk metal trade and downstream manufacturing sectors. HS Code Classification & Trade Specifications The HS Code 740311 falls under Chapter 74 (Copper and articles thereof), Heading 7403 (Refined copper and copper alloys, unwrought), and Subheading 740311 specifically designates refined copper cathodes. This six-digit classification aligns with the Harmonized System nomenclature adopted by the World Customs Organization (WCO) to facilitate uniform customs procedures globally. The rationale for this classification is based on the product’s form (flat unwrought copper) and purity level, distinguishing it from other copper forms such as wire, rods, or scrap. Trade practices involve packaging cathodes in wooden crates or steel boxes with protective coatings to prevent oxidation during transit. Preservation methods include sealing in inert atmospheres or applying anti-corrosive layers to maintain surface integrity. Shipping typically adheres to ISO container standards, ensuring secure handling and compliance with international shipping regulations. Quality standards follow ISO 9001 and ASTM B115 specifications for copper cathodes, supporting traceability and conformity in international trade documentation and customs clearance processes.
Copper cathode Chapter Note
1.- In this Chapter the following expressions have the meanings hereby assigned to them : (a) Refined copper Metal containing at least 99.85 % by weight of copper; or Metal containing at least 97.5 % by weight of copper, provided that the content by weight of any other element does not exceed the limit specified in the following table : (b) Copper alloys Metallic substances other than unrefined copper in which copper predominates by weight over each of the other elements, provided that : (i) the content by weight of at least one of the other elements is greater than the limit specified in the foregoing table; or (ii) the total content by weight of such other elements exceeds 2.5 %. (c) Master alloys Alloys containing with other elements more than 10 % by weight of copper, not usefully malleable and commonly used as an additive in the manufacture of other alloys or as de-oxidants, desulphurising agents or for similar uses in the metallurgy of non-ferrous metals. However, copper phosphide (phosphor copper) containing more than 15 % by weight of phosphorus falls in heading 28.53.
