Hammer HS Code description
Hammer harmonized system code
Product Overview Hammers classified under HS Code 820520 are hand tools designed primarily for delivering controlled impact force through a weighted head mounted on a handle. These tools typically feature a forged steel or alloy steel head with a smooth or textured striking surface, optimized for durability and shock resistance. Handle materials range from wood, fiberglass, to reinforced polymers, engineered for ergonomic grip and vibration dampening. The classification 820520 specifically encompasses hammers with heads made of non-mallet materials, excluding sledgehammers and similar heavy-duty variants. Subcategories include claw hammers, ball-peen hammers, and cross-peen hammers, differentiated by head shape and intended application. Commercially, these hammers serve critical roles in food service equipment assembly, retail hardware provision, and processing industry maintenance, offering precision and reliability in mechanical fastening, shaping, and surface finishing tasks. Their market positioning is underscored by adherence to industrial standards for hardness (typically Rockwell scale HRC 45-55), balance, and handle resilience, ensuring compatibility with professional operational requirements and international trade demands. HS Code Classification & Trade Specifications The HS Code 820520 falls under Chapter 82 (Tools, implements, cutlery, spoons and forks, of base metal), Heading 8205 (Hand tools, the following: spades, shovels, mattocks, picks, hoes, forks and rakes, axes, billhooks, and similar tools), with subheading 20 specifying hammers with metal heads excluding sledgehammers (8205.20). This classification is justified by the product's functional design as a hand-operated striking tool with a metal head, distinct from other hand tools or mallets. Common trade practices involve packaging in protective cartons or molded trays to prevent damage during transit, often accompanied by anti-corrosion treatments such as oiling or coating to preserve metal integrity. Shipping considerations mandate compliance with international packaging standards (e.g., ISPM 15 for wood packaging) and adherence to WTO agreements on customs valuation and classification. Quality standards align with ISO 6789 for hand tool specifications and ASTM F766 for impact tools, ensuring dimensional accuracy, hardness, and safety. These detailed classifications and trade specifications facilitate streamlined customs clearance, accurate tariff application, and regulatory compliance in global commerce.
