Monoammonium phosphate HS Code description

Monoammonium phosphate harmonized system code

Product Overview Monoammonium phosphate (MAP), classified under HS Code 310540, is an inorganic compound primarily composed of ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (NH4H2PO4). This white, crystalline solid typically exhibits high water solubility and a purity level exceeding 98%, conforming to industrial-grade and food-grade specifications. It is produced through controlled chemical synthesis involving phosphoric acid and ammonia, followed by granulation or crystallization processes to achieve consistent particle size distribution and moisture content below 1.5%. Within HS Code 310540, MAP is categorized alongside other phosphatic fertilizers, with subheadings differentiating based on purity and formulation. Its principal commercial applications span agriculture as a widely used phosphate fertilizer, fire retardants in industrial safety, and food additives functioning as leavening agents and acidulants in food processing. The product’s competitive advantage lies in its dual-nutrient composition (nitrogen and phosphorus), facilitating efficient nutrient delivery and enhanced crop yield, supporting its prominent position in global fertilizer markets and related industrial sectors. HS Code Classification & Trade Specifications The full HS Code 310540 is structured hierarchically as follows: Chapter 31 (Fertilizers), Heading 3105 (Mineral or chemical fertilizers containing the two fertilizing elements nitrogen and phosphorus), and Subheading 310540 (Monoammonium phosphate). This classification is justified by MAP’s chemical composition containing both nitrogen and phosphorus, distinguishing it from other phosphate or nitrogen-only fertilizers. Trade considerations for MAP include packaging in moisture-resistant bags or bulk containers, typically ranging from 25 kg to 1,000 kg, to prevent caking and degradation during transit. Preservation protocols emphasize maintaining dry storage conditions and controlled humidity levels to uphold product integrity and compliance with ISO 9001 quality management standards. Shipping requirements align with international hazardous material regulations when applicable, given MAP’s fire retardant properties, ensuring safe handling and transport. The product meets WTO trade facilitation measures, with harmonized labeling and documentation to streamline customs clearance and support accurate tariff classification in global supply chains.
