Peppermint oil HS Code description

Peppermint oil harmonized system code

Product Overview Peppermint oil classified under HS Code 330124 is a concentrated essential oil extracted primarily through steam distillation from the fresh or dried leaves of the Mentha piperita plant. This product is characterized by its clear to pale yellow liquid appearance, a strong, fresh mint aroma, and a specific gravity typically ranging between 0.900 and 0.920 at 20°C. The oil’s chemical composition is predominantly menthol (30-55%) and menthone (10-35%), which determine its quality and efficacy. Under HS Code 330124, peppermint oil is categorized within essential oils derived from Mentha species, with subcategories distinguishing natural, synthetic, and blended formulations. It is widely utilized across food and beverage flavoring, pharmaceutical formulations, oral hygiene products, and cosmetic applications due to its antimicrobial and aromatic properties. The product’s purity, consistent chemical profile, and compliance with international pharmacopeia standards position it competitively in global markets, supporting diverse industrial requirements and regulatory frameworks. HS Code Classification & Trade Specifications The HS Code 330124 falls under Chapter 33 (Essential Oils and Resinoids; Perfumery, Cosmetic or Toilet Preparations), Heading 3301 (Essential oils), with subheading 330124 specifically designating peppermint oil. This classification is based on the botanical origin and extraction method, aligning with the Harmonized System’s emphasis on product type and processing level. Commercial shipments typically involve packaging in stainless steel drums or food-grade containers ranging from 5 to 200 liters, with preservation ensured by airtight sealing and storage under controlled temperature (10-25°C) to prevent oxidation and quality degradation. Trade compliance mandates adherence to quality standards such as ISO 856, European Pharmacopoeia, and Codex Alimentarius guidelines, ensuring chemical consistency and absence of contaminants. Documentation requirements include Certificate of Analysis (COA), Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), and declarations confirming conformity with WTO trade rules. This classification and detailed trade information facilitate accurate customs processing, tariff application, and regulatory compliance for international import-export activities.
