Postcards HS Code description
Postcards harmonized system code
Product Overview Postcards classified under HS Code 490900 are defined as rectangular pieces of thick paper or thin cardboard, typically standardized in size (approximately 100 x 150 mm), intended for written messages and postal transmission. These items exhibit key characteristics including a smooth or textured surface suitable for printing, high durability to withstand handling during postal transit, and varying degrees of lamination or coating to enhance print quality and longevity. The HS Code 490900 encompasses subcategories such as blank postcards, printed postcards with images or advertisements, and those incorporating security features like watermarks or embedded codes. Commercially, these postcards serve essential roles in international business communications, promotional campaigns, and direct mailing services across sectors including retail, hospitality, and event management. Their cost-effectiveness and ease of customization position them as vital tools for branding, customer engagement, and official correspondence in global trade environments. HS Code Classification & Trade Specifications The HS Code 490900 is structured hierarchically within Chapter 49 (Printed Books, Newspapers, Pictures and Other Products of the Printing Industry), under Heading 4909 (Printed postcards, including picture postcards), and specifically the 6-digit subheading 490900 (Postcards). This classification is justified by the product’s nature as printed paper goods intended primarily for postal use, conforming to international postal regulations. Trade considerations include packaging in moisture-resistant, flat cartons or envelopes to prevent deformation, with preservation methods such as anti-fungal treatments or humidity-controlled storage during transit to maintain paper integrity. Shipping requirements emphasize protection against bending and surface abrasion. Quality standards align with ISO 9001 for manufacturing processes and adherence to the Universal Postal Union (UPU) specifications, ensuring compatibility with global postal systems. Compliance with WTO agreements and customs documentation standards is critical, facilitating seamless import/export operations and accurate tariff classification within international trade frameworks.
