Potato HS Code description
Potato harmonized system code
Product Overview Potatoes, falling under the Harmonized System (HS) Code 0701, are tuberous crops from the perennial plant Solanum tuberosum. They are known for their round or elongated shape, with a size range of 1 to 5 inches in diameter. The skin can be thin or thick and varies in color from yellow, brown, red to even purple. The flesh inside is rich in starch and can be white, yellow or purple. Under HS Code 0701, potatoes are classified into fresh or chilled categories with further subcategories based on the variety and type of potato such as Russet, Yukon Gold, and Red potatoes. The potatoes are used for a wide range of commercial applications including food service, retail, and processing industries. They are used in making French fries, chips, mashed potatoes, and as ingredients in various dishes. The market positioning of potatoes is based on their high nutritional value, versatility in cooking, and easy cultivation practices. HS Code Classification & Trade Specifications The complete HS Code structure for potatoes is 0701.90. The hierarchical breakdown is as follows: Chapter 07 (Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers), Heading 01 (Potatoes, fresh or chilled). The classification rationale is based on the product being a fresh or chilled vegetable and specifically a potato. Trade considerations for potatoes include packaging in breathable bags or boxes to prevent spoilage. The preservation method typically involves storing in a cool, well-ventilated area to prolong shelf life. Shipping requirements may vary depending on the distance and the chosen mode of transportation, but generally, it involves maintaining a certain temperature to prevent spoilage. Potatoes traded under this HS code must meet quality standards such as being free from soil, pests, damage, and diseases, and having a certain minimum size and weight. These standards are consistent with World Trade Organization (WTO) and customs documentation standards, ensuring the potatoes are of a certain quality and fit for consumption.
