Potato flakes HS Code description
Potato flakes harmonized system code
Product Overview Potato flakes, classified under HS Code 110520, are dehydrated potato products obtained by cooking, mashing, drying, and flaking fresh potatoes. These flakes are characterized by a uniform, granular texture with moisture content typically below 8%, ensuring extended shelf life and ease of reconstitution. The product undergoes precise thermal processing and drying techniques to preserve starch integrity, color, and flavor, meeting stringent quality parameters such as minimum starch content of 70% and controlled particle size distribution. HS Code 110520 encompasses subcategories including plain potato flakes, fortified variants enriched with vitamins or minerals, and instant-use flakes designed for rapid rehydration. Commercially, potato flakes serve as a versatile ingredient in food service sectors for mashed potato preparations, snack manufacturing, bakery formulations, and as a starch source in convenience foods. Their stable form factor, consistent quality, and ease of transport position them competitively within the global dehydrated potato market, offering cost-effective solutions for manufacturers seeking standardized potato derivatives. HS Code Classification & Trade Specifications The full HS Code 110520 falls within Chapter 11 ("Products of the Milling Industry; Malt; Starches; Inulin; Wheat Gluten"), Heading 1105 ("Flour, Meal, and Powder of the Potato"), and Subheading 110520 ("Potato Flakes, Granules and Pellets"). This classification aligns with the product’s processed and dried form derived from potatoes, distinct from raw or frozen potato products. Trade professionals recognize this code for compliance with international customs and tariff schedules under the Harmonized System nomenclature. Packaging typically involves moisture-proof, multi-layered kraft paper bags or polyethylene-lined cartons, with standard net weights ranging from 10 to 25 kilograms to preserve product integrity during transit. Preservation methods emphasize low moisture levels and oxygen barrier packaging to prevent microbial growth and enzymatic degradation. Quality standards adhere to Codex Alimentarius guidelines and ISO 22000 food safety management systems, ensuring conformity with WTO requirements. Accurate classification under HS Code 110520 facilitates streamlined customs clearance, tariff application, and trade documentation for importers, exporters, and regulatory authorities.
