Printer ribbon HS Code description
Printer ribbon harmonized system code
Product Overview Printer ribbon, classified under HS Code 961210, refers to ink-impregnated textile or film strips designed for use in impact and dot matrix printers to transfer characters and images onto paper or other substrates. Typically composed of woven polyester fabric or nylon materials, these ribbons exhibit high tensile strength and uniform ink saturation to ensure consistent print quality. Processing levels include dyeing, impregnation with carbon-based or pigment inks, and heat-setting to enhance durability and fade resistance. Within HS Code 961210, subcategories distinguish ribbons by ink type (carbon, pigment), ribbon backing material (cloth, film), and printer compatibility (typewriter, facsimile, or computer printers). Commercially, printer ribbons are integral to food service labeling, retail point-of-sale systems, and industrial processing where reliable, cost-effective printing of receipts, tickets, and packaging labels is essential. The product’s value proposition lies in its balance of durability, print clarity, and compatibility with diverse printing devices, positioning it as a critical consumable for businesses requiring consistent documentation output under varied environmental conditions. HS Code Classification & Trade Specifications HS Code 961210 falls within Chapter 96 (Miscellaneous Manufactured Articles), Heading 96.12 (Typewriter or similar ribbons, ink pads, and other inked consumables), and pertains specifically to ribbons for typewriters and similar printers. The classification is based on the product’s function as an ink carrier used in mechanical or electromechanical printing processes, distinguishing it from ink cartridges or digital printing components. Trade considerations emphasize packaging in moisture-resistant, anti-static foil pouches or sealed plastic reels to preserve ink integrity and prevent contamination during transit. Preservation methods often include desiccants and temperature-controlled storage to maintain optimal ribbon elasticity and ink performance. Shipping typically adheres to consolidated cargo standards, ensuring compliance with international transport regulations. Quality standards align with ISO 9001 manufacturing protocols and relevant ASTM ink durability tests, facilitating smooth customs clearance and conformity with WTO trade frameworks. This precise classification supports accurate tariff application, import/export documentation, and trade compliance verification for global supply chain stakeholders.
