Protein supplement - powder HS Code description
Protein supplement - powder harmonized system code
Product Overview Protein Supplement - Powder classified under HS Code 210610 refers to powdered dietary formulations primarily composed of proteins derived from animal or plant sources, intended to supplement nutritional intake. These products exhibit fine to coarse particulate physical characteristics, with moisture content typically maintained below 8% to ensure stability and shelf life. Processing levels vary from minimally processed isolates and concentrates to hydrolyzed protein powders, each conforming to stringent purity and bioavailability criteria. The HS Code 210610 encompasses subcategories including protein concentrates, isolates, and hydrolysates used in nutritional supplements, meal replacements, and specialized dietary products. Commercially, these powders serve diverse applications across food service sectors, retail distribution, and food processing industries, contributing to protein fortification in beverages, bakery products, and clinical nutrition. Positioned as essential functional ingredients, these protein powders provide a competitive advantage through consistent quality, compliance with nutritional standards, and versatility in formulation, supporting both consumer health trends and industrial manufacturing requirements. HS Code Classification & Trade Specifications The full HS Code 210610 is structured as follows: Chapter 21 (Miscellaneous Edible Preparations), Heading 2106 (Food Preparations Not Elsewhere Specified or Included), and Subheading 210610 (Protein Concentrates and Textured Protein Substances). Classification under 210610 is justified by the product’s composition predominantly of protein substances concentrated from natural sources, excluding whole food items and raw agricultural commodities. Trade considerations include packaging in multi-layered, moisture-resistant sacks or drums, typically ranging from 10 to 25 kilograms, to preserve product integrity during transit. Preservation methods focus on low moisture content and oxygen barrier packaging to prevent microbial growth and protein degradation. Shipping protocols comply with international hazardous goods regulations when applicable, ensuring temperature control and contamination prevention. Quality standards align with Codex Alimentarius guidelines and ISO certifications relevant to food supplements, mandating precise protein content analysis (commonly ≥70% by weight), microbiological safety, and absence of prohibited contaminants. This classification and detailed specification framework facilitate accurate customs declarations, harmonized tariff application, and adherence to WTO trade facilitation agreements.
