Pulses HS Code description

Pulses harmonized system code

Product Overview Pulses, classified under HS Code 0713, are a broad category of grain legumes that are harvested solely for the dry seed. These primarily include dried peas, chickpeas, lentils, and various types of beans. The key characteristics of these products range from their shape, size, and color, which can be spherical, oval, or kidney-shaped and vary from yellow, green, red, or brown to black. Depending on the processing level, pulses may be offered as whole, split, or ground into flour. High in protein and fiber, these nutrient-rich commodities are staple ingredients in many global diets. They are extensively used in food service and retail sectors, as well as by processing industries for producing flours, pastes, and snack foods. Pulses' market positioning is based on their nutritional value, versatility, and affordability, making them a competitive choice in the international food trade. HS Code Classification & Trade Specifications HS Code 0713 breaks down into several subheadings, each representing a specific type of pulse. For instance, 0713.10 covers dried peas, 0713.20 focuses on chickpeas, 0713.30 includes lentils, and 0713.40 signifies broad beans and horse beans. The allocation of pulses under this specific HS Code is due to the product's nature as dried leguminous vegetables. Trade considerations for pulses involve durable packaging such as sacks or cartons to maintain product integrity, along with storage and shipping in dry, cool conditions to prevent spoilage. Different quality standards apply depending on the destination market, but generally, pulses should be clean, free from live pests, and have a low moisture content to ensure longer shelf life. These specifications are in line with the World Trade Organization and customs documentation standards, providing a reliable reference for import/export businesses, customs brokers, and trade compliance officers.
