Rock samples HS Code description

Rock samples harmonized system code

Product Overview Rock samples classified under HS Code 970529 pertain to physical specimens of geological origin, collected and prepared for analysis, study, or display. These samples are typically characterized by their natural mineral composition, size specifications ranging from small fragments to hand-sized pieces, and minimal processing to preserve inherent geological features. The category includes subtypes such as igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rock specimens, each distinguished by texture, mineralogy, and provenance. These samples are predominantly used in academic research, geological surveying, museum curation, and educational settings, serving as reference materials for mineral identification, quality control in mining operations, and petrographic studies. Their value proposition lies in the authenticity, traceability, and documented origin, which are critical for scientific accuracy and regulatory compliance in international trade. HS Code Classification & Trade Specifications HS Code 970529 is structured under Chapter 97 (Works of art, collectors’ pieces and antiques), Heading 9705 (Collections and collectors’ pieces of zoological, botanical, mineralogical, anatomical, historical, archaeological, paleontological, ethnographic or numismatic interest), with Subheading 970529 specifically designating mineralogical specimens such as rock samples. The classification rationale is based on the nature of the product as non-commercial mineralogical material intended for collection or study rather than industrial use. Trade considerations include packaging in sturdy, moisture-resistant containers to prevent contamination and physical degradation during transit, with typical weight limits ranging from 0.5 to 5 kilograms per shipment to facilitate customs handling. Preservation standards emphasize maintaining natural conditions without chemical alteration, complying with WTO agreements and international customs protocols. Quality attributes such as purity, documented provenance, and sample integrity are essential for classification accuracy and customs clearance, ensuring seamless cross-border trade and adherence to regulatory frameworks.
