Sewing thread HS Code description

Sewing thread harmonized system code

Product Overview Sewing Thread under HS Code 5401 is a yarn specifically designed and manufactured for use in sewing. It is constructed of either synthetic or natural fibers, with the synthetic variety dominated by polyester, nylon, and rayon - all covered under this HS code. The key characteristics of this product include its tensile strength, uniformity, colorfastness, and resistance to heat, chemicals, and abrasion. Subcategories within HS Code 5401 differentiate between sewing threads of synthetic filaments (5401.10) and other synthetic or artificial filaments (5401.20). Its commercial applications are extensive, ranging from the garment and upholstery industries to the production of technical textiles. The Sewing Thread's market positioning is based on its essential role in various industries, offering a competitive advantage with its versatility, durability, and wide range of available colors and finishes. HS Code Classification & Trade Specifications HS Code 5401 is categorized under Section XI (Textiles and Textile Articles), Chapter 54 (Man-made filaments; strip and the like of man-made textile materials). The full six-digit code structure includes 5401.10 for sewing threads of synthetic filaments and 5401.20 for sewing threads of other synthetic or artificial filaments. The classification rationale is based on the product's composition and intended use. Trade considerations for Sewing Thread typically involve packaging in spools or cones to preserve the integrity of the thread, with shipping requirements ensuring protection against moisture and damage. Quality standards primarily focus on the product's physical and chemical properties, such as strength, elasticity, shrinkage, and colorfastness. As an internationally traded product, Sewing Thread under HS Code 5401 is required to comply with WTO and customs documentation standards, ensuring that all product descriptions and specifications align with international trade classification systems.

Sewing thread Chapter Note

1.- Throughout the Nomenclature, the term “man-made fibres” means staple fibres and filaments of organic polymers produced by manufacturing processes, either : (a) By polymerisation of organic monomers to produce polymers such as polyamides, polyesters, polyolefins or polyurethanes, or by chemical modification of polymers produced by this process (for example, poly(vinyl alcohol) prepared by the hydrolysis of poly(vinyl acetate)); or (b) By dissolution or chemical treatment of natural organic polymers (for example, cellulose) to produce polymers such as cuprammonium rayon (cupro) or viscose rayon, or by chemical modification of natural organic polymers (for example, cellulose, casein and other proteins, or alginic acid), to produce polymers such as cellulose acetate or alginates. The terms “synthetic” and “artificial”, used in relation to fibres, mean : synthetic : fibres as defined at (a); artificial : fibres as defined at (b). Strip and the like of heading 54.04 or 54.05 are not considered to be man-made fibres. The terms “man-made”, “synthetic” and “artificial” shall have the same meanings when used in relation to “textile materials”. 2.- Headings 54.02 and 54.03 do not apply to synthetic or artificial filament tow of Chapter 55.
