Tomato ketchup & tomato sauce HS Code description

Tomato ketchup & tomato sauce harmonized system code

Product Overview Tomato Ketchup and Tomato Sauce, categorized under HS Code 210320, are processed tomato-based condiments primarily composed of concentrated tomato solids, vinegar, sweeteners, and seasoning agents. These products exhibit a viscous, homogeneous consistency with a characteristic red hue, typically standardized to contain 20-35% total soluble solids (TSS) and titratable acidity ranging from 0.4% to 1.0% expressed as citric acid. Processing involves controlled thermal treatment to ensure microbiological stability and extended shelf-life without compromising organoleptic qualities. HS Code 210320 encompasses various subcategories including tomato ketchup, tomato puree sauces, and tomato-based sauces with added spices or flavorings, differentiated by viscosity and ingredient composition. Commercially, these products serve as essential condiments in food service sectors, retail markets, and as functional ingredients in food manufacturing, notably in ready-to-eat meals and processed snacks. Their value proposition lies in standardized quality parameters, regulatory compliance, and adaptability to diverse culinary applications, providing consistent flavor profiles and ease of integration in global supply chains. HS Code Classification & Trade Specifications The HS Code 210320 is structured as follows: Chapter 21 (Miscellaneous Edible Preparations), Heading 2103 (Sauces and Preparations; mixed condiments and seasonings), and Subheading 210320 (Tomato ketchup and other tomato sauces). Classification under this code is justified by the product’s composition, processing method, and intended culinary use, aligning with the Harmonized System nomenclature. Trade considerations typically include packaging in hermetically sealed containers such as glass bottles, PET bottles, or aseptic pouches with net weights ranging from 250ml to 5 liters, designed to preserve product integrity and prevent contamination. Preservation methods rely on pasteurization or sterilization processes, with added preservatives compliant with Codex Alimentarius standards to maintain microbial safety during transit and storage. Quality standards adhere to international food safety protocols (ISO 22000, HACCP), requiring documentation of parameters such as pH (normally 3.5-4.5), Brix levels, and absence of contaminants. Documentation for customs must explicitly state product composition, batch traceability, and conformity to WTO-sanctioned import/export regulations to facilitate smooth clearance and compliance verification.
