Urea - urea fertilizer HS Code description
Urea - urea fertilizer harmonized system code
Product Overview Urea - Urea Fertilizer classified under HS Code 310210 is a nitrogen-based inorganic compound widely utilized as an agricultural fertilizer. Chemically defined as CO(NH2)2, urea is a white crystalline substance with a typical nitrogen content of approximately 46% by weight, making it one of the most concentrated nitrogen fertilizers available. This product is manufactured through a controlled chemical synthesis process involving ammonia and carbon dioxide, resulting in a high-purity granular or prilled form that ensures ease of application and uniform nutrient delivery. The HS Code 310210 encompasses urea fertilizers, including those with and without additives, and is subdivided into various forms such as granular, prilled, and liquid preparations. Primarily, urea serves critical roles in enhancing soil fertility and crop yield across diverse agricultural sectors. Its commercial applications extend to food service industries for agricultural produce supply chains, retail distribution to farmers, and processing industries engaged in fertilizer formulation. The product’s competitive advantage lies in its high nutrient density, cost-effectiveness, and compatibility with multiple soil types, establishing it as a globally preferred nitrogen source in international fertilizer markets. HS Code Classification & Trade Specifications The Harmonized System (HS) Code 310210 is structured hierarchically as follows: Chapter 31 (Fertilizers), Heading 3102 (Mineral or Chemical Fertilizers Containing the Following Nutrients: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium), and Subheading 310210 (Urea, whether or not in aqueous solution). This classification is based on the chemical composition and primary nutrient content, specifically identifying urea as a nitrogenous fertilizer distinct from other nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compounds. Urea under this code is typically packaged in moisture-resistant, woven polypropylene bags with capacities ranging from 25 to 50 kilograms to prevent caking and degradation during transit. Preservation involves maintaining low humidity conditions and temperature control to inhibit hydrolysis and preserve granule integrity. Shipping protocols comply with international safety and environmental standards, including adherence to IMO regulations for bulk or containerized transport. Quality standards for urea fertilizers are governed by ISO 18642 and relevant national standards, ensuring minimum nitrogen content and limiting impurities such as biuret to acceptable thresholds (typically below 1.0%). Compliance with WTO agreements and customs documentation requirements is mandatory to facilitate smooth cross-border trade and accurate tariff classification.
