Wood carving HS Code description

Wood carving harmonized system code

Product Overview Wood carving classified under HS Code 442019 refers to intricately shaped or sculpted wooden articles, crafted primarily from solid wood materials through manual or mechanized carving processes. These products exhibit precise dimensional specifications, typically ranging from small ornamental pieces to larger functional items, with surface finishes that may include sanding, staining, or varnishing to enhance durability and aesthetic appeal. The wood carvings under this classification are processed to varying degrees, from raw, unpainted forms to finely detailed and polished artifacts, adhering to quality standards that emphasize grain integrity, absence of defects, and dimensional accuracy. Subcategories within 442019 encompass a broad range of wooden carved products such as decorative panels, figurines, religious artifacts, and utilitarian household items. Commercially, these products serve diverse applications across food service (e.g., carved serving utensils), retail display fixtures, and processing industries that require custom wooden components or artistic embellishments. Positioned competitively, wood carvings under this HS code offer a balance of craftsmanship and functional design, meeting the demand for both aesthetic value and practical utility in international markets. HS Code Classification & Trade Specifications The HS Code 442019 falls under Chapter 44 (Wood and Articles of Wood; Wood Charcoal), Heading 4420 (Wood Marquetry and Inlaid Wood; Caskets and Cases for Jewellery or Cutlery, and Similar Articles, of Wood), with Subheading 442019 specifically designated for wood carvings and articles of wood not elsewhere specified. This classification is assigned based on the product’s primary material composition—solid wood—and its carved or sculpted nature, distinguishing it from other wood articles such as plywood or veneered items. Trade professionals must adhere to packaging protocols that typically involve protective wrapping and sturdy cartons to mitigate damage during transit, while preservation methods focus on moisture control and pest prevention to comply with phytosanitary regulations. Shipping requirements often mandate clear labeling with HS codes and origin marks in accordance with WTO guidelines to facilitate customs clearance. Quality standards emphasize dimensional tolerances within ±2 mm, moisture content maintained between 8-12%, and surface finish consistency to ensure product integrity. This classification framework supports precise customs documentation, tariff application, and compliance with international trade systems.
