Backpack HS Code description

Backpack harmonized system code

Product Overview A backpack classified under HTS 4202.92 is a textile-made, wearable container designed to be carried on the back by two shoulder straps, intended primarily for carrying personal effects, books, electronic devices, tools or specialized equipment. Typical physical specifications include structured or unstructured bodies constructed from woven synthetic textiles (polyester or nylon) with common denier ratings from 200D–1000D, reinforced base panels, lined interiors, and closures such as zippers or buckles. Processing levels include cut-and-sew assembly, lamination or PU/PVC coating for water resistance, seam sealing, and addition of hardware (adjusters, D‑rings, YKK-type zippers). Quality attributes used for trade classification include measured capacity in liters (10–50 L common), hydrostatic head rating (typical 1,000–5,000 mm), stitch density, and load-bearing tests (strap tensile strength in newtons). Subcategories within HTS 4202.92 for commercial distinction encompass daypacks, laptop/back-to-office backpacks with padded compartments, technical/hydration packs for outdoor use, schoolbags, and travel packs. Commercial applications span retail sales, corporate procurement and gifting, outdoor equipment distribution, and uniform issue by service providers. HTS Code Classification & Trade Specifications HTS structure for this product is Chapter 42 (Articles of leather; saddlery and harness; travel goods, handbags and similar containers), Heading 4202 (Trunks, suitcases, vanity-cases, briefcases, school satchels, spectacle-cases, etc.; babies' carriers; handbags, whether or not with shoulder strap), Subheading 4202.92 (backpacks of textile materials). The classification rationale is that backpacks constructed primarily of textile fabrics (not of leather or composition leather) and designed as containers worn on the back meet the legal description for 4202.92; determinations depend on predominant material by weight, principal use, and finished form. Trade considerations for importers and brokers include unit packaging (polybag per unit, 6–24 units per corrugated carton), palletization (standard 48x40 in), labeling (country of origin, fiber-content declarations under Textile Rules), and applicable child-safety testing (CPSIA) for children's products. Preservation methods commonly specified are desiccant packets for container shipments and static shrink-wrapping; shipping documentation should cite HTS 4202.92 and provide net unit measurements (dimensions, liters, fabric denier) to support duty determination and compliance.
