Canola HS Code description
Canola harmonized system code
Product Overview Canola under HTS 1205.10 is defined as low‑erucic acid rape seed (Brassica napus, Brassica rapa) — seeds, whether or not broken — that meet compositional canola criteria (commonly <2% erucic acid in oil and <30 µmol/g glucosinolates in oil‑free meal). Key characteristics for trade and customs include oil content typically 40–45% by weight, allowable seed moisture routinely maintained below 9% for safe storage and shipment, test weight commonly ~60–70 kg/hl, and 1,000‑seed weight approximately 2.5–4.5 g. Processing levels range from cleaned, graded, and seed‑treated lots to certified seed for sowing; seeds may be presented whole, mechanically cleaned, or graded to specified dockage and foreign matter limits (typically <2–3%). Product classifications within HTS 1205.10 are commonly delineated by intended use (seed for sowing vs. seed for processing), treatment status (treated/untreated) and certification level (foundation/registered/certified). Commercial applications include edible oil production, biodiesel feedstock, protein meal for animal feed, seed planting, and oleochemical industrial uses. HTS Code Classification & Trade Specifications Complete HTS structure: Chapter 12 — Oil seeds and oleaginous fruits; Heading 1205 — Rape or colza seeds; Subheading 1205.10 — Canola (low‑erucic acid rape seed). Classification rationale: cleaned or unprocessed whole seeds of Brassica spp. that retain seed identity and meet canola compositional limits are classified as seeds under 1205.10 (distinct from processed oils or meals). Trade considerations for duty assessment and customs paperwork include typical commercial packagings (25–50 kg polypropylene sacks, 1,000 kg FIBC bulk bags, or bulk pneumatic vessels), requirement for phytosanitary certificates, and laboratory certificates for erucic acid and glucosinolate analysis (GC methods). Preservation and shipping requirements emphasize moisture control (<9%), segregation to prevent commingling, protection from high temperature/humidity, and phytosanitary/fumigation treatments where required. Quality standards referenced on import documents commonly cite USDA/FGIS grading parameters, analytical test reports (fatty acid profile, FFA), dockage and foreign matter thresholds, and supplier quality certificates to support accurate HTS declaration and customs duty calculation.
