Lighting HS Code description
Lighting harmonized system code
Product Overview Lighting classified under HTS 9405.49 refers to electric lamps and lighting fittings whose principal function is the emission, direction, or control of visible light in built or portable fixtures. Product definition covers complete lighting assemblies (fixtures with housings, reflectors, lenses, sockets, integral drivers/control gear and mounting hardware) rather than loose bulbs alone. Key characteristics and measurable attributes include typical materials (aluminum alloys, galvanised steel, polycarbonate, tempered glass), luminous flux ranges (≈200–50,000 lm), correlated color temperature (2,700–6,500 K), color rendering index (CRI 70–95+), input power (1–500 W), ingress protection ratings (IP20–IP68) and mechanical impact ratings (IK). Processing levels range from fully finished consumer/architectural fixtures to factory-integrated LED module assemblies; quality attributes cover thermal management, corrosion-resistant finishes and conformity to safety and environmental directives (UL/CSA/IEC, RoHS). Subcategories within 9405.49 are commonly segmented by form and application: ceiling/pendant, recessed downlights, wall sconces, track lights, flood/spotlights, street/area luminaires, portable lamps and their parts; primary commercial uses include retail, office, industrial process, outdoor/municipal, hospitality and display lighting. HTS Code Classification & Trade Specifications HTS 9405.49 is the six‑digit subheading in Chapter 94 of the HTSUS. Hierarchical breakdown: Chapter 94 (Articles of chapter 94: furniture; bedding; mattresses; lamps and lighting fittings) → Heading 9405 (Lamps and lighting fittings, including searchlights, spotlights, illuminated signs and parts) → Subheading 9405.49 (other electric lamps and lighting fittings and parts not elsewhere specified). Classification rationale: fixtures and fittings whose principal function is visible illumination, which incorporate or are designed to house electrical light sources and associated control gear, and are not classified in other more specific headings (e.g., vehicle or aircraft lighting). Trade considerations: common export packaging is palletized corrugated cartons or wooden crates with foam inserts, desiccants and anti‑corrosion wrapping; transport documentation must state HTS code, country of origin, declared gross/net weight, dimensions and unit value; fragile/shock markings and IP‑integrity protection for outdoor fixtures are recommended. Expected quality standards/documentation for US clearance include UL/CSA/ETL or IEC conformity, RoHS/REACH declarations, lumen/wattage spec sheets, IP/IK ratings and manufacturer test reports.

The following are, however, to be classified in the above-mentioned headings even if they are designed to be hung, to be fixed to the wall or to stand one on the other : (a) Cupboards, bookcases, other shelved furniture (including single shelves presented with supports for fixing them to the wall) and unit furniture; (b) Seats and beds. 3.- (A) In headings 94.01 to 94.03 references to parts of goods do not include references to sheets or slabs (whether or not cut to shape but not combined with other parts) of glass (including mirrors), marble or other stone or of any other material referred to in Chapter 68 or 69. Prefabricated buildings include "modular building units" of steel, normally presented in the size and shape of a standard shipping container, but substantially or completely pre-fitted internally. Such modular building units are normally designed to be assembled together to form permanent buildings.
